This is super hard to explain in writing. It looks like you're making box pleats with space between the center points. You need to create regular points across the top of the pattern where all the folds go. Then you need to create internal lines drawn from the top at those new points to the bottom of the pattern. You will have an outside fold line, an inside fold line and a flat meeting line for every pleat.

On the MD site visit this page - http://marvelousdesigner.com/learn/md5
Look under Pleats Folding & Sewing. There is a video there that shows the process and you can see the lines. There is no audio, so you'll just have to rewind it a couple times and watch closely.

That's all I can explain this way. I really need to do a video on these because they are confusing for people.

Good luck.

First, your particle distance is pretty high. That's why it looks a little chunky.

Second, I think the primary problem is width. I don't think you have enough material there. It's stretching and pulling the pleats open. Try making your pattern wider and see if that helps.

Third, sometimes you have to lower the collision (select pattern > property editor) on folded/pleated patterns. The pattern will try to push away from itself and sometimes that opens up folds/pleats.

Those are my best guesses for you to try.

For a full (bell) skirt shape, your best bet is to first make a underlying, foundation garment...a crinoline. This will hold the shape for the skirt. Then you would add whatever decorative style skirt over that.... drapes, swags, etc. I have some free MD crinoline pieces at ShareCG:

Start with one of those, freeze it once you have them fitted to your avatar, then build the 'pretty' skirt over it.
