Photographic way to make 3D

Post by heather » Thu Jun 25, 2015 7:47 am

Hey guys

I have began to use MD recently and it takes a lot of time to re create my real life clothes in 3D - I was wondering if there was a quick way to do it with photographs using another software

Please share your thoughts

There are some methods out there that allow you to take panoramic photos around a subject and translate that to a 3D model. It's basically scanning with your camera. I don't know how practical it is, but it does exist.

That did help :) However as Lori was saying there are some methods to take a photograph or a piece of cloth and have it 3D. I was wondering what software is used to have this done?

If you happen to own a Microsoft Kinect you can hook it up to your PC and there are software packages out there (some free and others less so, but worth it) that lets you use the Kinect as a 3d scanner. It is overkill for clothes, honestly, but it can also allow you to scan a person and use that scan as an avatar if you want to be fitting your designs to real people. It is a bit tricky to get a good scan, because it takes a few seconds and if the model moves, things can get weird, but with a bit of practice it works quite well. If you only need an upper torso scan, put the victim, er, model, on an office chair that spins; hold the kinect in place and spin the chair.

3d scanning or photogrammetry can be used to translate 2D photos into a 3D model. it also takes in the texture of the object you're scanning. 123D is good place to start, but for professional work I recommend Photoscan. It's much more robust and doesn't require you to upload your pictures to the cloud. You have to photograph the object you're scanning a certain way to maximize the chances of getting a clean model.
